Criminology is the scientific study of the nature, extent, causes, and control of criminal behaviour in both the individual and in society. It is an interdisciplinary field in the behavioural sciences, drawing especially upon the research of sociologists, social anthropologists and psychologists, as well as on writings in law. Penology is a section of criminology that deals with the philosophy and practice of various societies in their attempts to repress criminal activities, and satisfy public opinion via an appropriate treatment regime for persons convicted of criminal offences.
This book introduces the key conceptual debates and approaches in criminology and penology. Analytic in presentation, holistic in interpretation, with examples and narration in simple language, this book has been planned as a textbook for students and a reference tool for researchers.
