Aboriginal women surveyed by the Indigenous Women's Collectiveindicated that the police response received by others discouragedthem from going to the police response received by othersdiscouraged them from going to the police for help. They complainedof the lack of understanding of the problem by offices, and theirlack of sensitivity. The believe the police do not understand thesituation of the abused woman and the needs of children. More thanone woman who spoke to us told of complaining to the police, onlyto become the one removed from the home. This happened in spite ofthe face that young children were let in the care of an intoxicatedfather. Others told of stations where police attended in the home, saw the situation was calm when they wee there and told the womaneverything would be all right. When the police left, the violencebecame worse than before. With such lack of support from policeauthorities, it is not surprising that women suffer in silence.
